The Hardin-Simmons University Physician Assistant Program is a graduate level, professional Program designed to produce clinicians who are committed to provide exceptional, compassionate, individualized patient care, serve their communities, advance the profession and engage in life-long learning and professional development. The curriculum of the program requires 50 hours of community service. The students may volunteer in many different ways, including an annual medical mission trip. In spring 2018, the PA Dept., collaborating with Buckner International, went to Cusco, Peru. They were able to treat over 700 people in 5 days.

The Physician Assistant Program curriculum is delivered on a full-time basis for a total of 27 months. Students matriculate as a cohort into a 12-month academic phase, followed by 13 months of clinical/professional education and 2 months of additional didactic studies prior to graduation. The first cohort of students started the program in the fall of 2017, and they will complete the program in December of 2019. The second cohort of students started the program in August 2018.

The PA Program was designed with a dynamic team of experienced individuals who teach and assist the students throughout their journey to become certified physician assistants. The HSU PA Program contributes historical significance to the healthcare field: Dr. Jennifer Eames is the first female founding PA Program Director in Texas. The Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) granted the PA Program provisional accreditation in 2016. This accreditation status made HSU PA Program the first new program to be founded in the state of Texas in over 17 years.

Hardin-Simmons University Physician Assistant Program is a unique institution because of the small class size and high faculty to student ratio, the program’s West Texas rural focus, and its distinct Christian perspective of An Education Enlightened by Faith. HSU strives to help students become compassionate PA leaders who are committed to lifelong learning and community service.
