John E. Bradford, MPAS, PA-C, has established himself as a PA with exceptional range and dedication, working in some of the most remote and challenging healthcare environments across the globe. With more than two decades of clinical experience, Bradford has demonstrated a remarkable ability to provide quality medical care in settings that range from austere remote locations to large international healthcare systems, all while maintaining an active commitment to professional leadership and education.
Bradford was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, where he developed an early appreciation for outdoor recreation and adventure. This formative experience in the forests of Appalachia would later shape both his personal interests and his professional trajectory, drawing him toward roles that combined clinical medicine with work in remote and unconventional settings.
Before pursuing his clinical training, Bradford earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Montana State University in 1988, where he graduated with honors. This nursing background provided him with a strong foundation in patient care and clinical assessment that would serve him well throughout his subsequent career. After working as a nurse for 15 years, he joined the U.S. Peace Corps where he met a PA and grew fascinated with the role they played in healthcare. After completing his service, Bradford decided to pursue advanced practice and obtained his Master of PA Studies degree from the University of Utah in 2003. The University of Utah program provided rigorous training that prepared him for the diverse clinical roles he would pursue.
Bradford’s early career included work at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salt Lake City, where he served off and on from 2003 to 2009 as a PA in both primary care and urgent care settings. His work emphasized internal medicine and emergency services, gaining experience in complex patient management and emergency medicine. This setting provided him with essential clinical skills that formed the foundation for his later work in more specialized environments. Bradford also worked as a clinical instructor at the University of Utah and was responsible for PA clinical rotations at the VA Medical Center in Salt Lake City. This teaching role demonstrated his commitment to educating the next generation of PAs and his ability to mentor trainees in clinical settings.
In 2006, Bradford received the opportunity to participate in a pioneering pilot project developed by National Health Service Scotland to evaluate the PA role within the British healthcare system. From September 2006 to October 2007, he worked at Leith Surgery in Edinburgh as one of the initial participants in this groundbreaking program. This experience abroad gave him a valuable perspective on healthcare delivery systems outside the United States and the evolving international recognition of the PA profession.
In 2011, Bradford went back to where he was first exposed to the PA profession and joined the United States Peace Corps as a medical officer. Assigned to Malawi, Africa, Bradford provided primary healthcare for Peace Corps volunteers and trainees across Malawi, with additional stops in Namibia, and The Gambia, caring for 130 to 150 individuals. His work included implementing the volunteer health care delivery system in accordance with Peace Corps guidelines and standard medical practice, focusing his efforts on primary care, tropical medicine, emergency medicine, and health maintenance and education. This experience exemplified Bradford’s commitment to global health and his willingness to serve vulnerable populations in resource-limited settings.
From 2013 to 2023, Bradford worked at Midway Atoll in the North Pacific and Yellowstone National Park, serving as both a clinical provider and later as a clinical manager for these clinics. In these roles, he managed clinical teams, developed and reviewed treatment guidelines, oversaw hiring and staff development, and implemented policy and procedure updates. He also worked short term contracts in other locations including Shemya Island in the Aleutians (Alaska), Kabul, Afghanistan, and as a medical provider on a voyage of Semester at Sea providing urgent and emergency care to different communities in austere and remote locations. These unique experiences combined his clinical skills with global travel and education.
More recently Bradford has held positions with organizations focused on occupational and environmental health. Since 2015, he has held intermittent positions at clinics in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, operating a work-based clinic on the Alaska North Slope Oil Field, providing urgent and emergent care with stabilization and evacuation of critical patients. Since 2022 Bradford has worked full-time in Prudhoe Bay, traveling to the North Slope on a regular basis. Additionally, since January 2023, Bradford has served as a clinical and operational consultant for medical facilities in Yellowstone National Park through STGi Health, where he also works as a per diem clinical provider.
Beyond his clinical work, Bradford has been deeply involved in professional organizations and education. He serves as an adjunct faculty member for the University of Utah PA Program and for the University of North Texas, where he was recognized as Preceptor of the Year for 2024. He is a member of the American Academy of Physician Associates and the National Peace Corps Alumni Association.
Bradford’s most significant professional recognition came through his involvement with the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). In January 2018, he was appointed to the NCCPA Board of Directors, and he was reappointed for a second four-year term in 2021, serving as a director at large. Most notably, he served as chair elect in 2023, board chair in 2024, and immediate past chair in 2025, representing the PA profession at the highest levels of national leadership. As a member of the board, he participated in the launch of PANRE-LA and the expansion of NCCPA’s international engagement. In 2025, he was elected to the Board of Directors of the International Academy of PA Educators for a two-year term and has taken on the role of board secretary from 2026 to 2027. He has also served as NCCPA representative to the AAPA Diversity Committee from 2025 to 2028 and represented NCCPA at the REPRESENT! Summit in September 2026, underscoring his commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion within the PA profession.
Bradford has contributed to medical literature and professional education through peer-reviewed publications and presentations. He has written articles for the Journal of the American Academy of PAs and a book chapter for the 7th edition of the Auerbach’s Wilderness Medicine textbook (2011 ed). His presentations at national conferences have addressed diverse topics including diversity and equity in healthcare, wild animal attacks, and the physician assistant pilot program in Scotland. He served as a peer reviewer for the Journal of the American Academy of PAs in 2025 and 2026, and as an abstract reviewer for the Global Association of Clinical Officers and Physician Associates Annual Conference in 2025.
Bradford maintains current licensure as a PA in Montana, Alaska, and Wyoming, with NCCPA Certification valid through 2027. He holds multiple clinical certifications including Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Basic Life Support (BLS). He also holds certifications as a Breath Alcohol Technician (BAT) and Certified Urine Drug Collection Technician (CPC-U).
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bradford is an avid traveler and outdoor enthusiast. He has visited numerous countries and regions often combining personal travel with professional service. He has shared these adventures with his family and is an accomplished mountain biker, skier and rock climber.
Throughout his career, John Bradford has exemplified the versatility, compassion, and leadership qualities that define the PA profession. From pioneering work in Scotland to humanitarian service in Africa to cutting-edge leadership roles in professional organizations, he has consistently demonstrated excellence in clinical care, mentorship, and service to both his patients and his profession. John currently resides in Missoula, MT, where he skis, bikes and travels as often as he can.
