Henrietta Phelps Jeffries was known as a “doctress” and worked as a midwife in Caswell County, North Carolina. In 1911, she was tried for practicing medicine without a license. If found guilty, the penalty at the time was death. The case was dismissed by the judge and Jeffries continued to practice as a midwife until her death in 1926.

Information and photograph are from Jeffries’s Wikipedia entry.
